One morning, after a wild storm had washed thousands of starfish up onto a beach, a man came across a young boy walking along the beach. The boy was picking up the starfish, one at a time, and tossing them back into the sea.

The man was touched, but felt he had to speak up. “Kid,” he said, “this beach is miles long. There are thousands of starfish here–do you really think that saving a few of them makes any difference?”

The boy picked up another creature and skimmed it into the water before replying. “Mister,” he said, “I ain’t saving starfish–I’m feeding the sharks.”
