I just finished Jane Thomson’s Deeperand it was amazing.  It is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, told from the mermaid’s point of view, but it is such an original take on the story that it’s really something completely new.

Thompson’s Mer aren’t just humans with tails–their culture and life is that of aquatic mammals (they live in pods, like whales) and they are extremely believable biologically.  Melur, the narrator, tells her story in such a beautiful and simple way that you believe in her people, creatures with their own language and way of life, ocean going predators who think as well as human beings, but not like humans at all.

Honestly, this book is a gem.  Touching, lyrical, haunting–just an amazing piece of work.  And it’s 99 cents on Amazon.  Get it, you won’t be disappointed.
