I just finished Jane Thomson’s Deeper, and it was amazing. It is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, told from the mermaid’s point of view, but it is such an original take on the story that it’s really something completely new.
Thompson’s Mer aren’t just humans with tails–their culture and life is that of aquatic mammals (they live in pods, like whales) and they are extremely believable biologically. Melur, the narrator, tells her story in such a beautiful and simple way that you believe in her people, creatures with their own language and way of life, ocean going predators who think as well as human beings, but not like humans at all.
Honestly, this book is a gem. Touching, lyrical, haunting–just an amazing piece of work. And it’s 99 cents on Amazon. Get it, you won’t be disappointed.
Wow! You make me want to read this! But first I have to find my Kindle! I really need to clean up around here. I put it somewhere. . . .
I thought it was extraordinary, and I hope other people enjoy it as much as I did.
You can read kindle books on a regular computer, too, you know. Check out my e-reader apps page:
